Social & Companionship Support

Social & Companionship Support

Meaningful engagement and companionship to support your social goals and community connections.

How ClearStep can help

At ClearStep, we know that connection is one of the most powerful things in life. Our Social & Companionship support is about more than just spending time together. It is about building genuine relationships, reducing isolation, and helping you feel truly seen and valued.

Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation helps participants engage in social, recreational, economic, and community activities that build skills, confidence, independence, and meaningful connection with others.

What is social and companionship support under the NDIS?

Social and Community Participation is a funded support category under Core and Capacity Building supports. Its purpose is to support people with disability to achieve independence through increased social and community participation.

These supports are flexible and tailored to your individual needs and goals, helping you take part in social, recreational, economic, and community activities in ways that feel meaningful to you.

Why social connection matters

Community participation can provide a sense of belonging and connection, deepen relationships with friends and family, expand social networks, reduce isolation, and increase confidence and safety in the community.

Learning new skills, taking part in group activities, and navigating new environments can build self-confidence, support mental wellbeing, reduce stress, and encourage participants to take greater control of their lives.

What we offer

Friendly Companionship & Conversation

Warm, genuine companionship whether that is a chat over a cup of tea at home, a walk in the park, or sitting together to enjoy your favourite activity.

Hobbies & Shared Interests

Support to explore and enjoy the things you love, such as book clubs, social groups, cards, chess, Scrabble, art shows, workshops, local cafes, markets, lawn bowls, bocce, or community clubs.

Building Social Connections & Friendships

Regular support to build social skills, meet new people, make friends, form meaningful connections, and reduce isolation and loneliness.

Physical & Recreational Activities

Support to attend fitness classes, adaptive sports, swimming, walking groups, or any recreational activity you enjoy, with encouragement and practical assistance to participate fully.

Learning & Skills Development

Support to attend community education programs, try lessons, develop new skills, and take part in activities that bring confidence and joy.

Community Events & Outings

Support workers can accompany you to local events, festivals, markets, cultural venues, and community gatherings so you can fully participate in your community.

Peer Support & Group Programs

Support to attend peer support groups, disability-inclusive community programs, and group social activities where shared experiences can build confidence and belonging.

Our approach

We carefully match support workers to participants based not just on practical skills, but on shared interests, personality, and communication style. We use a person-centred approach focused on your goals, interests, needs, and meaningful participation.

Important funding note

NDIS funds the support worker's time to assist your social participation. It does not cover personal costs such as entry fees, tickets, meals, or activity costs. These remain the participant's own expense.

Need help choosing the right support?

We can talk through your goals, your plan, and the kind of day-to-day support that would be most useful. ClearStep supports both self-managed and plan-managed participants across Melbourne.
